GDSN PILOT WORKING GROUP
Inconsistent and inaccurate product information between hospitals, GPOs,
distributors and manufacturers is a significant problem in health care. Product
data that is not synchronized contributes to the inefficient exchange of
information in the supply chain, adding costs to an already burdened industry.
The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has created a working group comprised of industry representatives to keep
up-to-date on the latest industry efforts to tackle the problem. The group meets weekly to share and communicate learnings from the current GDSN pilot.
DoD is testing the concept of a product data utility (PDU) for the health care
supply chain, with the goals of reducing costs, improving business processes
and ultimately improving patient safety. In the first phase of the pilot, the DoD created and tested a “build your own” PDU within the DoD. Now in Phase 2, the DoD advances the effort by testing the Global Data Synchronization Network as a potential PDU for the entire health care industry. An industry PDU has the
potential to bring the same number of efficiencies to the health care supply
chain that data synchronization has brought to many other multi-billion dollar
industries, including the grocery and retail industries (learn more about the business benefits of GDSN and 1Sync).
This page serves as a resource for those interested in learning more about
industry activities that support the product identification initiative,
such as the PDU.
