Sprouted Seeds

Jesse Said:

My apple seeds sprouted, but is this the correct region for apple trees?

We Answered:

Ana, most of So. Ca. does not get enough Winter chill for apples. But My mom grew Granny Smith in Riverside. And in Beumont there are several apple orchards. Apples do not grow true from seed however so no matter what kind of apple the seeds were from you do not know what kind of fruit you might eventually get. Don listen if somebody says they won't grow fruit. They almost certainly will. They could be the next popular apple like Gala or a hard sour crab apple.

Frank Said:

The apple I just cut open has some sprouted seeds in it. What would be the best way to grow them?

We Answered:

You can follow all of the above suggestions and if they work, you will get a tree but probably not a very good apple tree. Apples propogated by seed generally produce a second rate tree with poor fruit. You will also need two apple trees if you want apples as apple trees do not self pollinate. Apple trees are reproduced by grafts as this makes for the most successful apple. If you want to grow them for fun and to watch a tree grow, have at it but don't expect too much. You won't get a very good apple producing tree. Johnny Apple seed ran around the country planting trees that were mostly good for cider. However, on the bright side, growing any kind of tree from seed would be an exciting experience for me and can be for you too.

Armando Said:

when do I transplant seedlings from foxglove seeds sprouted?

We Answered:

Set them out when they have an extensive root system, which yours probably don't yet have.

They're leggy because they need more light. If you don't need all the extras, just snip them off, or you can transplant them carefully, handling them only by the roots or the leaves--the stems at this point are very fragile. Then gradually expose them to as much light as you can during the day. It will take a week or two for them to grow sturdier. Good luck!
